Lighting Bridges

Light on Water

The lighting of bridges has a long and fascinating history, rooted in both the practical and the aesthetic. Traditionally, bridges were lit for visibility and safety, but over time, cities began to recognize the potential of bridge lighting to create dynamic, visually striking cultural landmarks.

Our Public Art and Design Program commissions artists to transform bridges from functional structures into beacons of creativity by injecting the subtle beauty and intrigue of light on water to fashion visually compelling experiences.

E. Clay Shaw Jr. Bridge

We are in the process of developing a $6 million artistic lighting Installation for the E. Clay Shaw Jr. Bridge (aka Southeast 17th Street bridge) in Fort Lauderdale, working with Tracy Dear (Dear Productions) to transform the bridge into an illuminated landmark.

This monumental light-based artwork will dramatically transform the 17th street causeway bridge into a mesmerizing visual experience. It will complete the renaissance of the gateway to Fort Lauderdale beach, which includes the new Broward Convention Center and Omni Hotel, and the complete reimagination of the iconic Pier Sixty-Six.

Expected completion 2027-2028.
